The band have long been in the running for the slot, as we reported here, and join a not necessarily long list of metal and hard rock bands to have been booked to play Worthy Farm.

The decision, similar to the one where Jay-Z was booked to play in 2008, will certainly make for the most contentious and dividing headline booking of this decade but Metallica have a long history of playing at the biggest stages and will undoubtably bring their a-game to the farm.

Metallica have sold more than 55 million records in the US alone, since forming in California back in 1981.

The band said in a statement: "We’ve made no secret that there was still one live music festival on our wish list that has eluded us... until now! There is such a vibe at Glastonbury and it's maybe the most quintessentially English festival, so when we finally got that call to visit Worthy Farm, we just had to reply with a resounding 'Yes!'"

The War On Drugs, Nick Mulvey and The English National Ballet also join the Pyramid Stage bill, the latter making their Glastonbury debut.

The newly-updated festival poster has also started the job of dividing artists into stages and not surprisingly there's some early clashes. Skrillex, Jake Bugg and Massive Attack appear to go head-to-head with the main headliners as they top the Other Stage bill.

Glastonbury Festival 2014 takes place from 25-29 June on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset. Glastonbury Festival tickets for 2014 have now sold out.

Tomorrow (May 9) is the last day in which you can claim a refund for unwanted Glastonbury tickets. A £15 administration charge will be retained from all refunded tickets and an additional £10 is retained if cancelling a coach package.

Once any cancellations have been processed, they will be released by See Tickets in the week commencing 12 May at an unannounced time. Anyone wishing to buy a ticket is advised to keep checking glastonbury.seetickets.com across next week. Any resale tickets and coach packages will be very limited in number, and only on select routes where a cancellation has made a seat available on one of their existing coaches.
