The British band, who recently released the single 'Magic' from their sixth studio album - due May 16, will headline the Saturday night of the free-for-the-public festival next month. Chris Martin broke the news on Radio 1, as Coldplay appeared in the Live Lounge on Fearne Cotton's mid-morning show.

Drummer Will Champion said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have been asked to play Radio 1's Big Weekend. Playing in Glasgow is always been so much fun and Radio 1 have always been wonderful to us so it couldn't really be any better!"

BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend 2014, now in its 11th year, takes place at Glasgow Green, Glasgow, Scotland from Friday 23 - Sunday 25 May. Last month the 50,000 free tickets for this year's event were snapped up in just over half an hour on the morning of release.

Sunday night's headline act will be announced later this month. Pharrell Williams, Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini are already confirmed to play.

For the first time in the Big Weekend's history, Friday night will see a special curtain-raiser event featuring a DJ line-up in Glashow's George Square. Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and others, many still to be announced, will play the event, strictly for those 18 and overs only, in front of 14,000 music fans.
