U2 to tour next summer

U2 to tour next summer

Ross Purdie on 11 October 2004

In a statement, manager Paul McGuinness has stated that the massively anticipated tour will take place in 2005, although he said that no dates have been set and warned eager fans not to buy tickets yet - because they simply don't exist.

He said: "We are still very much in the planning stages of our tour for next year which will visit the US, Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia, and the band is really looking forward to getting out on the road.

"As soon as we have finalised the plans, the tour will be announced on U2.Com as usual and purchase instructions will be clearly available. Nothing is confirmed until the official tour announcement, no tickets will be on sale until after this time."

It has been rumoured that U2 have been earmarked to headline next year's Glasto, ever since festival founder Michael Eavis exclusively revealed to Virtual Festivals in June that it would be his dream come true to secure the band. Although last month, his daughter Emily hinted to us that the festival may end up booking smaller bands than this year's collosal trio of Oasis, Muse and Paul McCartney - a mould U2 certainly don't fit!

But now there are whispers that the UK legs of the U2 shows will be taking place at Croke Park, Dublin on 26th, 27th, 28th June, London's Twickenham Park on 2nd July, and the Stade De France in Paris in early July next year - giving further weight to the possibility of the Irish stadium fillers incorporating an appearance at Glastonbury into their tour schedule.

On the other hand, they could find themselves on the other side of the world over the weekend of June 24-26, the weekend on which Glasto is scheduled to take place - provided it is granted a licence.

So many 'ifs', so many 'buts'!

One thing is for sure though; U2 release their new album 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb' on 22nd November preceded by new single 'Vertigo' on 8th November.
