Promoters AEG Live and The Royal Parks confirmed the news today and said that the show will go ahead with the remaining line-up performing for free and existing ticket-holders receiving a full refund.

A spokesman for Sir Elton said: “Elton is incredibly disappointed to postpone these tour dates. To know that he had made such super-human efforts and continued to perform to thousands through his illness only confirms his dedication to his European fans.

Ray Davies, Elvis Costello, Gabrielle Aplin and Nick Lowe will perform on the The Great Oak Stage and all ticket-holders can get in free if they bring their tickets. A further allocation of free tickets are now available through the Barclaycard presents British Summer Time website.

Elton John has had to cancel other shows in Germany and Italy over the next few weeks and is due to return to the UK in September, for performance at the First Direct Arena in Leeds and at Bestival, which remain unaffected.

The following Hyde Park dates are going ahead as scheduled:

Sat 13th July: The Rolling Stones plus Jake Bugg, Tom Odell and the Horrors.
Sun 14th July: Lionel Richie and Jennifer Lopez plus Chic Ft. Nile Rodgers and Eliza Doolittle

Tickets for Lionel Richie and J.Lopez are available now, priced at £59.50 plus booking fee.
