The Washington based five-piece are currently working on their sixth studio album and follow-up to 2007's 'We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank', which went Gold in the US.

The festival dates affected include high profile appearances at Latitude Festival 2013 in Suffolk, its sister event, Longitude in Ireland and Scotland's T In The Park 2013 next month.

Outside of the UK audiences at Hurricane and Southside Festivals in Germany, Open'er in Poland, Rock Werchter in Belgium, NorthSide in Denmark, OpenAir St. Gallen in Switzerland the Best Kept Secret Festival in the Netherlands and Main Square Festival in France will now go without the chance to see Modest Mouse.

An official statement from the band read: "After much thought, we have decided to cancel our EU/UK tour to continue work on our forthcoming album. We do appreciate our fans and promise that we will make it up to you next year. We look forward to sharing our new music with the world next year."

The band played two Coachella festival dates earlier this year and even premiered a new song 'Be Brave' for the Californian audiences.

Modest Mouse were due to headline the second stage at Latitude Festival 2013, branded the BBC Radio 6 Music Stage for the first time. There's been no official confirmation yet if a replacement will be found for them or if Calexico, bellow them on the bill, will now headline in their place.
