Blog: Will Justin bring sexy back to Wireless Festival?

Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z top Wireless 2013

Joe Taylor - 27 February 2013

After a five-year hiatus, during which he focused on a generally scoffed at attempt to bring Myspace back into the 21st century, Timberlake returned to the music world this month in collaboration with the all-powerful Jay-Z.

Clad in his Suit & Tie, the video for his latest effort tries to breathe new life into the Frank Sinatra vibe – a move often exacted by former pop stars in an attempt to show how grown-up they’ve become (ahem, Robbie Williams).

Meanwhile, the former N-Sync star (you didn’t think we’d forgotten now, did you?) announced a tour with Hova that includes the ever-evolving Wireless Festival, which has once again moved from its temporary site at London’s Hyde Park to the freshly available Olympic Park.

The question is, does Justin have what it takes to revitalise Wireless? And has the festival finally found its true home?

Not according to the spoilt brat of hip hop, Kanye West, who threw his rattle out of the pram this weekend in London by telling his fans, “I got love for Hov, but I ain’t f*cking with that Suit & Tie,” while complaining about the music business. It seems somebody wants his Watch the Throne partner back.

And Kanye has every reason to be jealous. Such is his omnipotence, performing with Jay-Z will boost any musician’s career ten-fold, and he will almost certainly do the same for Timberlake at Wireless. There’s no doubt that punters will fall for the impeccably dressed Trousersnake Timberlake when he takes to the stage accompanied by the impossibly slick Jay-Z – not to mention that this is the rap-god’s only European performance in 2013.

But the future of Wireless Festival itself once again seems less certain. Changing its sponsor from O2 to Barclaycard in 2009, its line-up from indie’s finest to hip-hop royalty, even its venue and the number of days it spans countless times has left fans uncertain of how they stand. Yet the festival always gives the people what they want - including Rihanna in 2012 - and continues to draw tens of thousands of punters each and every year.

It may seem to be shrouded in uncertainty, but Wireless has the strongest pop line-up of the summer so far, with the Justin Timberlake/Jay-Z duet to be joined by Snoop Dogg, Rita Ora, Frank Ocean, Calvin Harris and plenty more to be announced. Glastonbury has yet to reveal its headliners (not that it matters, you’ve already missed out on tickets), leaving Beyonce's first V Festival show and Rihanna’s scheduled performance at T in the Park as Wireless’ closest competitors for the money of early ticket buyers.

As for Wireless’ new home at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park...we’re not so convinced. The festival reportedly pulled out of Hyde Park due to curfew issues, but the new venue in Stratford seems like just another close-by park that will do the job...for now.
