Malian singer Rokia Traoré and bands from the country of Mali will open the Pyramid Stage on each day of the festival, Glastonbury organisers have revealed.

The move is in response to Islamist fighters capturing parts of the northern territory in Mali and imposing harsh sanctions, which includes a ban on all 'western' music.

Organisers also confirmed parts of the site, including a revamped dance area, will reflect West African culture to try and highlight the situation in the region. Emily Eavis, co-organiser of Glastonbury, said: "We have a long tradition dating back to the 80s of African acts playing the festival. Given the situation in Mali at the moment, it felt particularly important to show some solidarity.

"We want to stay out of the politics, but if we can give musicians a platform we will always do that."

38-year old Rokia Traoré previously played the festival in 2009 and is an established musical performer in her own country. Mali is renowned worldwide for having produced some of the stars of African music, including Salif Keita.

No other acts have been officially confirmed for the Glastonbury Festival line-up but rumoured acts to feature include Jake Bugg, Editors, The XX and Professor Green.

The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Kings Of Leon have all been rumoured to headline the festival which takes place on Worthy Farm, Somerset from June 26-30 2013. Insider tips received by Virtual Festivals support a headline set from Fleetwood Mac in 2013.

All tickets for Glastonbury Festival 2013, estimated to be approximately 140,000 in number, sold out after one hour and 40 minutes last year. A resale date has yet to be confirmed but will take place at some point in in April.
