Currently both sites include six stages: the Main Stage, NME/Radio 1 tent, Dance/Lock Up Stage, Festival Republic Stage, Alternative Stage and BBC Introducing Stage.

Festival organiser Melvin Benn told BBC Newsbeat: "Within those additional two or three stages there will be a lot more diversity of music.

"We're changing the arena at Reading and Leeds quite significantly.

"I've got quite a strong buzz and feeling in myself in the changes that I'm making there. I'm still formulating the ideas."

Benn said there was no plans to increase capacity at either site, which has been increasing steadily over the past decade.

He added: "There will quite a bit more dance music, quite a bit more other bits and pieces."

Reading Festival 2013 and Leeds Festival 2013 take place from 23-25 August.

"Reading and Leeds are going to be going out on sale before Christmas, but we'll have the full [set] on sale in March next year where we announce most of the bill," said Benn.

"I'm looking at probably announcing certainly one of the headliners before Christmas."

Today the festivals confirmed general release 2013 Reading and Leeds Festival tickets will go on sale 30/11/2012.

This year the festivals featured headline performances from Kasabian, The Cure and Foo Fighters. Read our 2012 Reading Festival review and 2012 Leeds Festival review.
