The festival-goer, from Shropshire, was found unresponsive in his tent and pronounced dead at the scene. Staffordshire Police have informed his immediate family but will not release his name until a formal identification has taken place.

Chief Inspector Carl Ratcliffe, of Staffordshire Police, said: "We are very saddened by the tragic death of this young man and we are working to establish the full facts and build a picture of his actions in the few hours before his death.

"We will be preparing a report for Her Majesty's coroner who has already been informed about this incident and we are working to support those affected by this incident."

A spokesman for V Festival added: "We are all very saddened by this tragic incident, and we want to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of this young man."

In a separate incident 10 men have been arrested by Essex Police after the body of man, 39, was found beaten to death in the garden of a property opposite the entrance of V Festival's other site in Hylands Park, Chelmsford.

The Stone Roses headlined Hylands Park last night to a raptourous reception, and The Killers topped Weston Park with a selection of old classic and some well chosen covers.
