The Maccabees - Beach Break Live 2012 review

'Yet another triumph for them'

It appears as if The Maccabees took their billing as "special guests" very seriously - tonight they treat Pembrey Country Park to a greatest hits set, running the gamut of their three albums and a gauntlet of emotions, from a tetchy 'Feel To Follow', a jaunty 'Can You Give It' and a brooding 'No Kind Words'.

'Latchmere' makes a welcome festival comeback, while frontman Orlando Weekes dedicates 'X-Ray' to headliners Friendly Fires.

Such a career-spanning setlist means we follow their journey from the scratchy indie urchins of 'First Love' through to the stately, driving rock of 'Love You Better' to the band we see before us today, confident enough in their songwriting to try something quiet and fragile in 'Forever I've Known' alongside their most fully realised anthem to date in crowd favourite 'Pelican' in just an hour.

Fast becoming more of a festival essential than wet wipes, it's yet another triumph for them in an evening full of top-notch performances.
