Highlights from day two of the festival

Dutch Uncles opened things up at St. Michael’s Church, with singer Duncan
Wallis quipping “I know we look like we need more coffee – we do!” Nonetheless, they delivered
an energetic set, with ‘Face In’ and a propulsive version of ‘The Ink’, highlights
of a performance that reminded everyone once again how they've become one of the country’s most intriguing bands.
The church was also hosting the Crawl alternative Media Expo, with spoken word guests plus vinyl, gig posters, comic
books and fanzines on sale, with an opportunity for festivalgoers to contribute to the “Zine in an hour” project
by submitting their own contributions.
Toy also played a well-received set there later, giving
recent single ‘Motoring’ a fuzzed-up outro as the audience cheered. As with Dutch Uncles, much of the
audience were crning their necksor attempting the stand on chairs in order to see the band in such a small space.
Elsewhere, up-and-coming rapper Scrufizzer attracted earlycomers to the SB:TV showcase
at the Electric Ballroom, where he showed off his rapid-fire delivery over bass-heavy grime. Aided by fellow rapper Ash
Catch’Em and DJ Cameo, his short set marked him out as a potential star in the making.
While he doesn’t appear to have a breakthrough hit in his set yet, there was plenty of ‘Boy In Da Corner’-era
Dizzee style charisma to hint that it’s just a matter of time.
Follow yesterday afternoon’s comedy
acts, there were further sets today, with Frisky & Mannish heading things up at the Black Heart,
while Patrick Monahan and Suzie Ruffell were among those performing at Camden Rock and Musical
comedy ruled the roost at the Jazz Café.
Other early musical events saw Johnny Foreigner,
Evans The Death and Tall Ships at Koko, Donaeo at the
Roundhouse Terrace and the likes of Jehst, Young Fathers and Clement Marfo &
The Frontline on the outdoor Red Bull Bedroom Jam arena.
Kids In Glass Houses have just
finished a matinee show at Koko, ahead of evening performances there from The Cribs, Spector,
Glasvegas.
