Canadian composer and singer-songwriter extraordinaire, Rufus
Wainwright has been added to the Latitude 2012 bill.
He will take the coveted Sunday
afternoon slot in the Obelisk Arena, this year at the slightly later time of 1.00pm. This
is to allow for world-famous concert pianist Lang Lang
to perform at 12.00pm on the floating Waterfront Lake Stage. It means each performer can play with no competition
from any other artist.
Celebrated musician Rufus Wainwright was born into a musical dynasty, the son of folk singer, Kate McGarrigle
and Loudon Wainwright III. Learning to play
the piano from the age of six, Rufus began touring with his mother and aunt's group, The McGarrigle Sisters &
Family from the age of 13. The group also featured his sister, Martha Wainwright, also now an established
solo artist.
Rufus Wainwright has released several critically-acclaimed
albums, including 'Poses', 'Want One' and 'Want Two'. His new album, 'Out Of the Game'
is set to take a pop-infused turn. It is produced by Mark Ronson
and will be released on May 1.
Previous acts to play the Sunday afternoon slot at Latitude include
Thom Yorke, Joanna Newsom, Tom Jones and Scala
and Kolacny Brothers.
