The band confirmed earlier this month that they had entered the studio to record the follow-up to 2009's '21st Century Breakdown', and they will now also headline Japan's Summer Sonic Festival and France's Rock En Seine in August.

These dates mark their first officially scheduled shows since 2010, although the band have played several secret shows recently in order to road-test new songs, including ‘Amy’, ‘Nuclear Family’ and ‘Carpe Diem’.

It’s not known if other dates will follow at this time.

Billie Joe Armstrong and co. had been strongly tipped to be one of the headliners at Reading & Leeds 2012, but with yesterday’s announcement that The Cure, Kasabian and Foo Fighters are this year’s headliners, they can be ruled out of such a slot.

Summer Sonic 2012 takes place in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan on 18-19 August.

Summer Sonic tickets are priced at 27,000Y for a 2-day ticket for Tokyo and 22,500Y for a 2 day ticket for Osaka, with day tickets also available.
