It's long been rumoured that the group are planning to celebrate their 50th anniversary with their first gigs for five years, with many hinting that they could also be involved in one of the London Olympics concerts.

Speaking to the Radio Times, guitarist Wood, when asked if the band would be returning this year, replied:  “Be lovely, wouldn't it? That's what we're on the verge of. I dunno what the hell is gonna happen yet but we all feel we owe it to ourselves and to the people to do something.”

“We're all ready to go individually,” he claimed, “It's just a matter of tying up loose ends and coming together as a unit."

Drummer Charlie Watts has also spoken of his desire to see the Stones play live again, telling BBC 6Music last month: "It would be lovely next year to do some shows because it will be 50 years. Ronnie plays, I still play, Mick sings, he can do it anyway, I think Keith [Richards] is doing some records."

Singer Mick Jagger has previously said that live dates were “not on the table”, with a spokesperson claiming there were “no firm plans” for the group to tour or play shows when the band were linked with a Glastonbury headline slot last year.

While Blur, New Order and The Specials are confirmed to play the Olympic closing ceremony concert in London’s Hyde Park on 12 August, no-one has yet been announced for the Opening ceremony show at the same venue, which takes place on 27 July, just seven days after the 50th anniversary of the first ever Rolling Stones gig.

It may be worth noting that Stones promoters Live Nation are also behind the giant Olympic gigs, while Wood mentioned Hyde Park specifically when talking to the Evening Standard about the prospect of playing again last year:   "We'll try to recapture the old camaraderie...I know Keith is fully supportive, as are the rest of the boys in the Stones. Playing Hyde Park would be fabulous."
