The Vines cancel UK festival dates

United Kingdom United Kingdom | 07 July 2004

No strangers to controversy, The Vines have announced that they are 'just not ready to play live again', in light of their troubled frontman's increasingly unpredictable behaviour.

Last month, the Aussie band cancelled a US stadium tour with Incubus so they could take a break in the lead-up to the festivals. But now they have decided that their scheduled Reading and Leeds August dates are too soon for a possible return. However, they have denied claims the band have broken up.

A statement issued on the band's behalf read: "The Vines have reluctantly made the decision to pull out of their scheduled Reading and Leeds performances this year. The band were unable to take part in a planned US summer tour with Incubus due to lead singer Craig Nicholls' needing to rest and recuperate following a mentally and physically demanding period. With the festival shows coming directly after the cancelled US dates, The Vines felt they would still not be ready to return to the stage.

"We're really sorry that we have to pull out and want to thank all of our fans and friends for being so understanding about our situation this year. Reading and Leeds are definitely festival highlights - we all remember Reading two years ago as our best gig ever - so it's been a very hard decision to make, but sadly we're just not ready to play live again."

In early June, Nicholls and bassist Patrick Matthews had an on-stage bust-up, prompting the latter to quit the band. Matthews is now playing for Australian alt-rock group Youth Group.

It is unknown at the moment who will replace The Vines for the two August bank-holiday dates but Virtual Festivals will bring you the news as it is happens.
