Rumour Mill: Tony Iommi hints at Sabbath reunion (again)

Chris Eustace on 24 October 2011

Speaking to Planet Rock Radio, the guitarist said: "At the moment we're in talks about it [reforming]. But what's going to happen with it, I don't know. There's no definite decision on anything at the moment, but at least it's going. We're talking, we're all talking to each other. We've met up, had a play, and it was great."

Perhaps mindful of what happened earlier this year when he first floated the idea of the metal pioneers getting back together, he did strike a note of caution, continuing: “We haven't announced anything yet, because nothing's definite. We're taking it steady, because these things have a tendency to backfire. 'Oh, you said you were getting back together, but you haven't.' So I don't know. We'll have to see. It would be nice to think we could, and I think we would all like to do it, but it's a bit more involved than that.”

Frontman Ozzy Osbourne has also recently confirmed that he, Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward were looking to reconvene, complete with new material, telling Billboard that they were “...in the very early stages, so we haven't recorded anything yet. If it works out, it'll work out. If it doesn't, I'll keep doing my thing.”

Ozzy’s children, Jack and Kelly, have also dropped hints recently that Sabbath will reform.

Sonisphere and Download are both contenders for the black country metal legends.

Speaking of Download, festival head-honcho Andy Copping has been dropping plenty of hints over Twitter in the last month. Excuse us for wildly speculating (but then that’s what The Rumour Mill is for), but it may be time for some grunge legends to join the bill. "Yes, I would of course book Soundgarden” was Andy’s reply to one Cornell fan’s query, enthusing that "it has been too long, they need to get here and quick!” With the band finally looking to come over to Europe, perhaps Donington will be their destination?

Suggestions were also bandied around the internet that a rumoured Van Halen 2012 World Tour, that was apparently cancelled before it was even announced, included a date at Download on June 10. Industrial language may have been used to deny that one, but it certainly appears that someone decided to ‘Jump’ (sorry).
