Somerset man trying to start festival to fill Glastonbury gap

2012 event will take place if he can 'get a big enough headline act'

Local businessman Kevin Newton, who is based in Shepton Mallet, said the event would take place ahead of the Olympics.

"I am speaking to music agents in London to find out which headline acts could be available,” Mr Newton told local website This Is Somerset.

"If I can get a big enough headline act we will have a 'big weekend 2012' in the Mendip area,” he added.

Newton was unable to confirm any details of a line up, but he did say there would be a place for Manchester boy band Reconnected, whom he manages.

Following a successful year in 2011, with shows from U2, Coldplay and Beyonce, Glastonbury Festival organisers have decided to take a year off because of the London Olympic Games and to keep Worthy Farm fallow.

Radiohead and Kasabian have both expressed interest in performing at Glastonbury Festival when it returns in 2013.
