OFWGKTA - Reading Festival 2011 review
'Unparalleled for effort but unable to quite deliver a finished article'
Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All – their name maybe be forgettable, their live shows are far from it. A throng pack out the Radio 1/NME Tent early as the rap troupe take to the stage in pockets of performers: Mellowhype (Hodgy Beats and Left Brain) first before they’re all here by song three, including Tyler, the Creator cycles on with his foot still in a cast from a break at an earlier show.
The effort and energy they deliver here is unparalleled and their love for it is obvious too as they coax the crowd into a frenzy, feeding off the riotous mood, with both Tyler and Hodgy Beats entering the tumultuous crowd and leaving it stripped of clothing and out of breath.
However, they remain in the 'one to watch' box unable to quite deliver a finished and polished article. They exhibit one or two very good individual tracks and as they develop the songs feel finished, Mike G in particular stands out with a more developed flow and style delivering one of his verses acapella.
Today’s outing proves that Odd Future are an excellent live act and their music, although a little scruffy, has a lot of hooks and merit. Expect humungous things because they’re already delivering big.
