My Chemical Romance - Reading Festival 2011 review
'Everything suddenly turns in stadium-rock sized chaos'
Opening with ‘Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na)', the ‘Danger Day’'s team start by putting the party into proceedings. Through 'Planetery' and a sea of giant balloons that surf the modest main stage crowd, everything turns in stadium-rock sized chaos.
Gerard Way's red barnet is at times the most eye-catching spectacle of the night - that was until the lasers!
Addressing the UK riots, Way condemned the violence and encouraged everyone to just sing. Queue tasteless segway into their latest radio-pop single 'Sing'.
Preaching to the choir, the band kick start 'Teenager' with a sing-a-long that the alter boys and girls lap up.
Re-invoking the 2006 Reading set closer 'Helena', the band treat the remaining hardcore of the MCR army to a left-of-centre surprise when Queen's Brian May turns up to help the band cover 'We Will Rock You'.
In a flurry of fireworks, confetti and potent video displays, the US band, with adopted guitar godfather May, close the Friday night with a rapturous rendition of 'Black Parade'. Way and May have the final say on day one and take the main stage crown from the likes of The Offspring and 30 Seconds To Mars.
