Glastonbury tickets sell for over a grand ... for charity

The auction was the second time that Glastonbury tickets have been sold to raise money for the charity, which works to provide people in the third world with safe drinking water. An auction in April raised 4,500 for WaterAid.

Emily Boyd-Carpenter, WaterAid's Fundraising Manager said: "We're enormously grateful to Glastonbury for choosing us as the charity to benefit from this eBay listing and we'd like to thank the people who have bid so generously for the tickets.

"WaterAid is delighted to be one of the main 'good causes' supported by the festival. It's an ideal partnership - an event such as Glastonbury requires one million gallons of water over a period of five days and hygiene and sanitation are major concerns when turning a dairy farm into a huge, densely-populated tented city.

"For three days people experience what it's like not to be able to have a shower, run their tap or use their flushing toilet. This helps people to have a better understanding of what it's like for the world's poorest people who struggle every day to access water or any kind of sanitation."

The WaterAid fundraiser is the only time that festival organisers have endorsed eBay as a forum for this year's ticket sales, having previously scoured the auction site to identify touts selling their tickets on.

A Glastonbury spokesman said: "In most cases these people were discouraged from selling their tickets. I'm not sure if anyone had their order cancelled as a result of it."

All tickets, which are personalised to the buyer, have now been sold and dispatched. Festival goers will be asked to show identification to prove they are the person who ordered their ticket.

VF will be on site from Wednesday, providing the best pictures, news and reviews from the festival as it happens.

Glastonbury 2004 takes place at Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset, between 25-27th June.
