Motorhead triumph over tragedy at Sonisphere

A packed crowd fill the main stage for the rock legends

A packed crowd filled the main stage anticipating a triumphant set above Mastodon, yet Lemmy would probably be the first to tell you that rock and roll spits you out as sudden as it sucks you in.

Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Kikky Dee carried on in classic metal style however, with a cathartic set of classic Motörhead material, including ‘Overkill’ and an abrasive ‘Ace of Spades’, against a backdrop of drum riser-gushing steam and corseted fire eaters.

Earlier the main arena turned into a wake for late Slipknot bassist Paul Gray, as Sonisphere observed a site-wide two minute silence.

The moving experience was summed up by festival veteran Emyr Price, who said, "I've been to loads of festivals, but I've never seen anything as moving as that. It was beautiful."
