Huge festival crowds are nothing new to Linkin Park, but tonight the buzz leading up to their set was electric, with a mass of excited fans gathered in front of the main stage to witness one of the world's most successful rock bands.
The Californian band emerged from smoke, silhouetted by a giant white-lit screen behind them and kicked off proceedings with 'Papercut'. With a set like the greatest hits collection that will inevitably surface before long, the band treated every song like an event, with visual displays and the most impressive light show of the festival so far.
The production was flawless, synchronised videos accompanying each song adding a deservedly epic perspective to the energetic performance. At times the hi-tech show was so slick and well-timed it almost became a sort of futuristic musical theatre.
The crowd responded well overall as the band lived up to the hype with ease, but songs from their earlier material - such as 'Numb' and final song 'One Step Closer' - brought the biggest reaction. Linkin Park have, for the most part, stuck to a formula that strikes a balance between electronic and alternative genres, and it was obvious tonight that they are at their strongest when they stick to what they do best.
It's a huge choreographed spectacle that rolls out every night to thousands of fans, but even with such a polished act, tonight they proved that they haven't lost the excitement of a great live rock show.
