Having asked the public to vote for which songs they wanted to hear in the headline slot through Zane Lowe's
Radio One show, the quintet played hit after hit in their fantastically gritty set.
"When they asked us to
come and play we didn't know what we'd do. We don't have a new record out, so we asked you to vote. Thank you for giving us
a reason to play,” said lead singer Josh Homme.
The lean mean rocking machine provided
a shot of highly charged adrenalin at the end of a long, hot day.
Homme's cool irony came out to play as he talked
to the crowd.
"There's so much wonderful music here. We've got Beyonce over there... No no, I wanna put a ring
on it," he replied to the boos of the crowd when they heard the diva's name. "I won't tell you where I want to put
the ring, though."
In an outstanding performance where each song was a highlight, the quadruple whammy of
'First It Giveth', 'Go With the Flow', 'No-one Knows' and 'Song for the Dead' towards the end of the band's time onstage sent
the crowd into meltdown as pink flares were set off amongst the throngs, adding to the blistering atmosphere.
The
band were clearly as overwhelmed as the fans, as Homme asked for the house lights to be turned up in order to see the crowd.
"This is a night we'll remember for a long, long time," he said as they left the stage. You're not the
only one, Josh.
The hits the fans wanted to hear:
-Feelgood Hit of the Summer
-The Lost Art of
Keeping a Secret
-You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire
-Burn the Witch
-Tangled
up in Plaid
-Better Living through Chemistry

-Little Sister
-The Fun Machine Took a Shit
and Died
-3s & 7s
