But several thousand ticket-holders turned up to watch The Wombles
play an hour-long the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury 2011, many in cardboard masks of the characters.
A stink originally
kicked up when Michael Eavis said the group shouldn't have been booked, with the show's creator fighting
back saying "[The band] are looking forward to it. They had been planning to tidy up the site afterwards but now aren't
going to do that.”
After opening with 'Remember You're A Womble', the crowd outside the tent thins and
by the time 'Banana Rock' and 'Womble Of The Universe' are played it looks like Micheal Eavis might have been right.
Sure, if they'd been due to play the Kids Field they would have got away with it but it's hard to see that revellers are
enjoying 'Super Womble' without their tongue firmly in cheek.
But there is a tent full still as they joke:
"From backstage I'd like to welcome the great Eric Clapton... but can't because he's not here."
Chris
Spedding comes out instead as a special guest for a guitar lick or two for 'The Wombling Twist'.
They
finished with 'Wombling Merry Christmas' and Underground Overground'.
