The Charlatans play to a receptive crowd at Wychwood

Wychwood Festival: Friday headliners

The ironic keyboard intro of 'Weirdo' has lost nothing of its strength with age, eliciting rumblings of excitement from the throng.

Iconic songs come thick and fast, proving themselves a band that reminds the listener of just how many hits they put forward during their time in the mainstream charts.

'Smash The System' by contrast seems like it would present little danger of doing so, it wanders into Chilli Peppers 'Under The Bridge' territory, but does so aimlessly as though it may stop at the shop for a paper on its way to protesting.

'Country Boy', 'One To Another' and 'The Only One I Know' return the band to tighter styling and it becomes clear at this point that it is in the indie 90's guitar band style that Burgess' voice and their sound finds its home. Here is where The Charlatans are at their best, wandering through the Hammond to the 90's in floppy jeans, a pleasant walk indeed.

Wychwood Festival 2011 continues tomorrow (4 June) with performances from Neville Staple, The Bluetones, The Waterboys and many more.
