Cooper Temple Clause Interview @ New Order 2002

Virtual Festivals: How's your day been, then?

Ben Gautrey: Well, you know when you go out  and get absolutely lashed, and get in at 5am?

VF: Yep... [Expecting a debauched tale of rock n' roll excess]

BG: Well, that was me last night. My mum came in and woke me up at 10 o'clock this morning ["Bless!"] and said, "Get up! You've got a gig today with New Order". So I had to leave straight away, and I wasn't feeling my best. I'd much rather tell you something more exciting, like meeting Daryl Hannah...

VF: Well, at least that's something to aspire too. There was a lot of breaking things on your stage earlier...

BG: Yes, we definitely had an aggressive vibe going on.

VF: So did you at least get to meet New Order?

BG: Well, yes, we did stick our heads around the door of their dressing room to make sure we were at the right venue. It was huge, with flowers everywhere, and there they were, sitting hunched around a little table in the corner, like a terrapins' tea party!

VF: Ha ha. They're using autocues on-stage [with the lyrics on]...

BG: I'm not surprised - they're all absolutely wasted!

VF: We saw you on MTV the other night, at the Rock Am Ring festival [in Germany]. What was that like?

BG: That was a nightmare! It was the last night of the tour, and we were all shattered, hating eachother and missing our girlfriends. Our crew were having some technical problems and the German stage crew were shouting at us, "You inefficient English..." [laughs]

VF: Oh dear! Well at least you've got the London Mardi Gras festival to look forward to on June 6th.

BG: Yeah, should be a great one. Look forward to seeing you there!

[Runs off into the crowd, to watch those Indie Pop Terrapins New Order]
