The Homelands Interviews: Bez

United Kingdom United Kingdom | by Wayne Hoyle | 04 June 2004

Whilst schmoozing and ligging with the best, who should we spy but none other than the master of mong himself, Bez. We managed to prise the freaky dancer away from fellow legend, Arthur Baker for a brief and entirely pointless few words. Do you know what I mean?

VF: In the notorious year of Mudlands, we remember seeing you in the early hours backstage. You were sat on a chair, by yourself, in the middle of a lake-sized puddle. Can you remember that?

Bez: Yeah! I was sat on a chair 'cos I was unable to walk. I'd just had a motorbike crash. I was bad really but I had a chair so I just sat in the middle of the fucking puddle.

VF: Is Homelands a yearly thing for you then?

Bez: Not really. I've not been for the last couple of years but I fancied a bit of a change. You know, get out of Manchester. See how you fucking southerners have it down here for a while.

VF: Is there anybody who you're particularly keen on seeing tonight?

Bez: I'm just gonna follow me nose. You know what I mean? Just gonna enjoy the whole day, the whole event, man.

VF: If you ever put on Bezfest, who would you want playing there?

Bez: Well, you want a fucking right good crowd like we've got here. That's the most important thing - you know what I mean? And there's plenty of fucking talented people out there who'll make it a fucking good do. Without a doubt, you know what I mean?

What sort of stuff are you listening to at the moment?

Bez: Do you know what, I've got really boring. It must be me old age or summat but I'm kind of into world music and all that at the moment. But I'll listen to anything. But mostly me sons are robbing me stereo and fucking, just fucking turning the airwaves full of hip-hop and all that carry on.

VF: Are you still living next door to Shaun?

Bez: Oh, unfortunately so. There's no escaping the man, do you know what I mean?

VF: What did you think to the recent BBC3 documentary?

Bez: I've not seen it. I've heard people mention it, but I've not seen it so I can't pass comment on the thing. Or the film either.

VF: Aren't you doing some DJ dates with Shaun at the moment, though?

Bez: I'm doing sommat in Homelands. (Thinks for a moment) No, not Homelands. It's Turnmills in a few weeks. Yeah, I've been doing a bit of DJ-ing lately.

VF: Is there anything else in the pipeline for the future? Any solo stuff?

Bez: Yeah, I've got a single coming out! But again it's with Shaun - he's doing some vocals on it for me and that. That's coming out soon but when I don't know.

VF: Finally, just how fucked are you planning to get tonight?

Bez: Ay! If I don't get fucked you can send me home. Come on!
