ATP
Festival Weekend One (Matt Groening) 2010 – 7-9 May
What is it?
One of five planned wet dream festivals for musos this year, the Matt Groening (the man who created the Simpsons) curated
ATP event is a chance for the said cartoonist to see his record collection spring to life in the nostalgic surrounding of
Butlins in Minehead. As per usual, the leftfield, indie and damn right strange are on the
musical menu along with all of the magical trimmings of the holiday camp (swimming pools, go karts, fruit machines) available
to use as well.
Three to see:
Spiritualized (Performing
‘Ladies And Gentleman We’re Floating In Space’) – The raw, open-wounded account of heartbreak
will be relived in its pure drone, gospel and post Brit Pop lushness
Amadou and Mariam – African greatness from a blind Malian couple
Daniel Johnston – A rare outing for the infamous bi-polar folk poet
Can
I still get tickets?
It depends on how many mates you have and whether or not you mind sharing. There isn’t
any camping, so accommodation is in chalets, and two-berth double rooms and three, five and six-berth chalets are already
sold out. Twin rooms and four, six and seven self-catering options still remain with prices starting at £163.50.

City Showcase – Spotlight London 2010
– 6-8 May
What is it?
City Showcase is a leg up for emerging artists
and a weekend of cheap gigs for the most curious of music lovers. Taking over various London venues, the
festival offers advise through workshops and seminars for new acts whilst fusing together an indie, soul, R&B, classical,
rock, jazz, folk and roots music line-up for fans. Amy Winehouse, Hot Chip and (oh dear)
The Rifles have all made a name from it in the past; will Master Shortie do so this time?
Who to see:
Lykez – Quick-thinking female MC backed by glitchy grime and dub beats
Then go out
and try your try - this festival is all about discovering new music.
Can I still get tickets?
£5 wristbands will give you access to virtually everything at no extra charge and extra gigs at a
reduced rate.
