Freezing festivals: snow soirees

United Kingdom United Kingdom | by Daniel Fahey | 03 February 2009

It hardly ever snows, but when it does, boy isn't it brilliant: no school, no work and plenty of time building half-arsed snowmen, while simultaneously decapitating the heads of others that have been left grinning in the park.

We've decided to tenuously link the wonderful white weather with the festivals that will have you freezing over the next few months. Warning: awful pun ahead.

Snowside Festival 2009
Nassfeld, Austria – 23-29 March

For lovers of the quirky and the cold, this week-long bash, which debuts this March, is an alpine adventure that mixes the eccentricity and originality of Secret Garden Party with the musical expertises of Eddy Temple Morris. The dance and indie soundtrack will certainly knock the icicles off of your nose, while SGP's craziness will be found amongst the pistes with Suicide Winter Olympics, arts and loads of hidden treats. There's plenty of skiing and snowboarding to be done as well.

Tickets: packages start from £289. Click for full Snowside ticket options.

Snowbombing 2009Mayforhen, Austria, 29 March – 4 April

Celebrating its tenth birthday this year, this ski holiday-cum-glacier festival is one to put the shivers up your spine. An avalanche looks likely with Fatboy Slim, Dizzee Rascal, Biffy Clyro and more set to get fans stomping, while festival-goers blast away their hangover gliding down the mountains on skis and snowboards. There will also be hidden parties, mountain top igloos and fancy dress revelry to make sure its an alpine experience you're unlikely to forget, unless you have a Jagerbomb too many…

Tickets: packages start from £279. Click here for full Snowbombing ticket options.

Tignes-Fest 2009Tignes, France, 15-19 April

Tignesfest could snowball in to one heck of a party - not only is there skiing and snowboarding action over five days, but the best bit is: its free! The Loose Cannons, Kissy Sell Out and Eddy Temple Morris curate this small French extravaganza, which is held in one of the highest ski resorts in the world – Tignes. With a line-up that's set to incite and intrigue with music for the 'discerning and curious' and lots of slope action, you may not want to miss out, so go get your skis on.

Tickets: free, but travel packages from the UK start from £395 for a week. Click here for Tignesfest ticket options.

The Big Chill 2009Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire, 7-9 August

You were warned - a terrible pun, but a great festival. One of the original boutique bashes, The Big Chill spawned out of the 90’s club scene and the festival manages to cater for the comedown the next day as well. There's plenty of dance on offer but jazz, hip hop, funk soul and chill out music as well as well as art installations and much more. Basement Jaxx, Alice Russell and Norman Jay are all set for this year's event along with a loyal following of Chillers.

Tickets: £129 for an adult weekend pass. Click here to buy The Big Chill tickets.
