The BRIT Awards 2012 - The VF Verdict
All the winners and all the losers
Chris Eustace - 21 February 2012
All the catergories, all the nominees and all the winners
Best Male Solo Artist
Nominees: Ed Sheeran (6-17), Noel Gallagher’s
High Flying Birds (5-2), Professor Green (9-2), James Blake (20-1), James
Morrison (20-1).
Winner: Ed Sheeran
VF Says: Ed Sheeran - It was a special moment when we caught up with Ed at Beach Break Live last year, on the weekend ‘The A-Team’ went Top 3, and now another summer of festivals awaits. Even the first decent Gallagher-related effort since ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory’ surely won’t stop him winning tonight.
Confirmed festivals: RockNess 2012, Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend 2012, Wakestock 2012, Ibiza Rocks 2012 & Mallorca Rocks 2012.
Rumoured for: V Festival, Reading & Leeds
Best Female Solo Artist
Nominees: Adele (1-14), Jessie J (4-1), Florence & The Machine (14-1), Kate Bush
(16-1), Laura Marling (16-1)
Winner: Adele
VF Says: Adele – Ok, apparently she likes festivals about as much as she likes paying tax, but with ‘21’ now owned by 99.9999% of the world, it can’t really be anyone else, can it?
Confirmed festivals: None
Rumoured for: Glastonbury Festival 2013 (you never know!)
Best Album
Nominees:
Adele – ‘21’ (1-19)
Coldplay – Mylo Xyloto’ (8-1)
Florence & The Machine – ‘Ceremonials’
(9-1)
Ed Sheeran – ‘+’ (12-1)
PJ Harvey – ‘Let England Shake’ (16-1).
Winner: Adele
Confirmed festivals: None
VF’s Says: PJ Harvey – ‘Let England Shake’ – Yes this does contradict what we just said about Adele, but ‘21’ already has all the recognition it’ll ever need. ‘Let England Shake’’s sales are miniscule in comparison, and the more people that are aware of just how good it is the better, especially after PJ’s blistering sets at Bestival and Roskilde last year.
Confirmed festivals: None
Rumoured for: Latitude Festival 2012
Best Group
Nominees: Coldplay (1-12), Kasabian (8-1), Elbow (10-1), Arctic Monkeys (10-1), Chase & Status (12-1).
Winner: Coldplay
Confirmed festivals: None
VF Says: Arctic Monkeys – If anything the Arctics are underrated these days – the excellent (and slightly overlooked?) ‘Suck It And See’ and last year’s triumphant T and V headline slots show they shouldn’t be. Honourable mention to C&S, who’ve become a genuine festival heavyweight too.
Confirmed For: Orion Festival, Coachella
Best Breakthrough Act
Nominees: Ed Sheeran (1-3), Jessie J (7-5), Emeli Sande (14-1), Anna Calvi (16-1), The
Vaccines (20-1)
Winner: Ed Sheeran
Confirmed festivals: RockNess 2012, Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend 2012, Wakestock 2012, Ibiza Rocks 2012 & Mallorca Rocks 2012.
VF Says: Don’t rule out Jessie J, who overcame having to cancel shows to star at Glasto and V, even when sitting down.
Confirmed for: Future Music Festival, Isle Of Wight Festival, Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend, Wireless
Rumoured for: T in the Park 2012, V Festival
Best Single
Nominees:
Adele ‘Someone Like You'
Ed Sheeran ‘The A-Team’
Example
‘Changed The Way You Kissed Me’
Jessie J feat. B.O.B. ‘Price
Tag’
JLS feat. Dev ‘She Makes Me Wanna’
Military Wives & Gareth Malone ‘Wherever You
Are’
Olly Murs feat. Rizzle Kicks ‘Heart Skips A Beat’
One Direction ‘What Makes You Beautiful’
Pixie Lott ‘All About Tonight’
The Wanted ‘Glad You Came’
Winner: One Direction
VF Says: The Wanted – ‘Glad You Came’ – This one will forever remind VF of the mass of topless, neon-facepainted Essex boys moshing to this at V Festival Chelmsford last year. It helps that it’s a great song too (just forget about that dodgy ‘Iris’ cover, eh boys?).
Rumoured for: V Festival 2012
International Male Solo Artist
Nominees: Aloe Blacc, Bon Iver, Bruno Mars, David Guetta, Ryan Adams
Winner: Bruno Mars
Confirmed festivals: None
VF Says: Bon Iver – And not just to see if Twitter goes mad again like at the Grammys. Fingers crossed for some UK festival dates.
Confirmed for: Oya, Dour, Roskilde, Heineken Open’er, Bonnaroo, Coachella
Rumoured for: Latitude, T In The Park, Reading & Leeds, Bestival
International Female Solo Artist
Nominees: Beyonce, Bjork, Feist, Lady Gaga, Rihanna
Winner: Rihanna
Confirmed festivals: Wireless Festival 2012
VF Says: Rihanna – Her impressive
sets at V Festival 2011 only served to cement her status as pop royalty, so let’s hope they keep the volume
up in Hyde Park for her this summer.
International Group
Nominees: Fleet Foxes, Foo Fighters, Jay-Z & Kanye West, Lady Antebellum, Maroon 5
Winner: Foo Fighters
Confirmed festivals: None
VF Says: Foo Fighters – It’s official: Dave Grohl can do no wrong. Isle Of Wight and T In The Park got slayed last year, and there are whispers about a return to his spiritual home for the ‘Wasting Light’ victory lap.
Rumoured for: Reading Festival 2012 & Leeds Festival 2012
International Breakthrough Act
Nominees: Aloe Blacc, Bon Iver, Foster The People, Lana Del Rey, Nicki Minaj
Winner: Lana Del Rey
Confirmed festivals: None
VF Says: Aloe Blacc – He gave us one of 2011’s festival anthems in ‘I Need A Dollar’ and his old-school soulman showman sets temporarily made us forget about the rain everywhere we went.
Rumoured for: Wireless, Bestival, V Festival
