Costa del Bazaar: Benicassim sets up stall
We check out the bands to try in Spain, plus Spotify playlist

That’s Ben Haim. Festival Internacional de Benicàssim or simply Benicassim
as it’s hollered by red-faced Brits, is four days of the best live acts from around the world, plus eight days of free
camping and an entire week of "extra-musical activities". If that weren't enough, it also happens to be situated
near one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Just remember to pace yourself; eight days of festival madness in the sunshine
will take its toll!
So where is it?
Once a refuge for pirates and smugglers, Benicassim
is located right in the heart of the Costa del Azahar, Spain. So you can sunbathe, swim and experience all
the joys a music festival has to offer: music, like-minded people and even the Mediterranean! What more could you want?
Well, a decent line up. After all, what's a music festival without good music?
Luckily ensuring a
great line up is Benicassim's speciality, with artists such as The
Streets, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes and Arcade Fire
headlining. Other great acts include Brandon Flowers,
Elbow, Chase & Status, Primal Scream and Mumford
and Sons. Yeah, you get the drift.
So who should you check out before you go?
These
for starters…
Beirut
With their
new album due for release in August, Benicassim will offer a chance to experience both new and old material from Beirut and with stunning mountains as a truly unique backdrop, the band’s
mesmerising blend of folk and indie should be all the more pleasing.
Portishead
Portishead have been captivating fans with their down-tempo
trip hop for years. Sometimes haunting, yet always utterly profound the group are an important part of the British experimental
music scene and with Benicassim one of the few dates the band are scheduled to play this year, they are not to be missed.
Pendulum
Pendulum have been a firm festival favourite over the years and
having already destroyed Download and Glastonbury this summer, you can rest assured the
Australian DnB giants will put on a heavy show as always. Think bright lights, lasers and bass. Lots and lots of bass.
Tinie Tempah
With massive hits like ‘Pass Out’, ‘Frisky’
and ‘Written In The Stars’, the UK’s answer to Jay-Z will be sure to pull a huge
crowd. You'd be mad to miss him.
Bombay Bicycle Club
Energetic Indie rock that's perfect for getting you into the festival
mood, if the combination of alcohol, the sun and the sea hasn't quite got you there already! With a new album on the way in
August you can be sure to expect some exclusive new material too.
What should I load up to listen to on the plane then?
Download our Spotify playlist to get you in the mood.
