Who the Henham are... Scala & Kolacny Brothers?
We research the Belgian choir billed for Latitude 2011

Dane Cobain - 03 June 2011
As we reported
previously, Latitude festival has announced that Scala & Kolacny Brothers are set to perform the
prestigious Sunday midday slot, which has previously been reserved for Thom Yorke, Joanna Newsom
and Tom Jones.
But just who are they? Well-known for their covers of acts like Metallica, Bjork,
U2, Nirvana, Rammstein and Kylie Minogue, the group gained exposure when their version of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’
was featured in the trailer for the film The Social Network.
Organisers also announced that from Tuesday
7 June, festival-goers will be able to choose some of the songs that the group will perform.
With the
festival just over a month away, we’ve compiled a mini-history of the group’s career.
‘I
Touch Myself’ (Divinyls Cover) – 2004
Formed in 1996, they didn’t record their first album
until 2002. This effort is from the 2004 follow-up album ‘Dream On’, an interesting song choice considering the
brothers “usually work with 30-40 singers aged 16-26 at a time.” Talk about living the dream.
‘Engel’ (Rammstein Cover) – 2004
Released as a bonus track on ‘Dream On’,
this haunting cover of German industrial metallers Rammstein was the group’s first single. It was also used as the end
credits for Rammstein’s Volkerball DVD.
‘Yellow’ (Coldplay Cover) – 2006
Three albums later and this was released on
‘It All Leads To This’. Likely to be one of those ‘lighters in the air’ moments if they choose to
perform it.
‘California Dreamin’’ (Mamas and the Papas Cover) – 2010
Taken
from ‘Circle’, the group’s most recent album, this promises to put the ‘LA’ in Latitude. The
group’s tenth album in eight years, it also features covers of Metallica, Alanis Morissette, Depeche Mode and Kings
of Leon.
‘Creep’ (Radiohead Cover) – 2010
If there’s just one song that everybody
flocks to see, it’ll be this one. Used in the advertisement for ‘The Social Network’, it’s estimated
that it was seen over 250 million times in cinemas and on TV, as well as 10 million times on YouTube. Now’s your chance
to see it in the flesh.
Scala & Kolacny Brothers are set to perform at Latitude 2011, held from 14-17 July at the Henham Park Estate, Suffolk.
The National, Paolo Nutini and Suede will
headline this year’s event.
