What, when and where
This award-winning, medium-sized festival is set in Robin Hill Country Park, the leafy heart of the Isle of Wight, and runs from 9-12 September.

Since its inception, by curator and DJ Rob da Bank in 2004, Bestival has quickly been recognised as a fan's favourite for those seeking an 'alternate' festival without sacrificing quality. The combination of musical acts from the upper echelon alongside beautiful natural surroundings and boutique loveliness presents an eclectic mix hard to find elsewhere on the festival scene.

Five to watch

Mumford and Sons

Having completely mesmerised this year's Glastonbury crowds with their haunting and equally angry marching folk, they travel to Bestival with an ever-increasing following. You will jump, you will feel emotional, you will have to see them.

The Prodigy

Few bands have simultaneously entranced successive generations of fans whilst maintaining their past tribal followers. Now entering their third decade in music, these techno-punk legends still bring the noise by the neon truckload. Renowned as being one of the best live acts around, you should prepare yourself for a breathtaking assault on the senses.

The Flaming Lips

The Oklahoma-based psychedelic rock group are a bit of an underground fancy these days. But there's no doubt their lush sounds and intriguing song subjects and lyrics (‘Psychiatric Exploration of the Fetus with Needles’, anyone?) is befitting of Bestival's atmosphere. Catch them now or you may have to wait a while.

New Young Pony Club

Emerging from nu-rave's propensity for the ambiguous, NYPC have strengthened their 80's synth funk to create a well placed, boisterous and sometimes moody vibe. A vibe that oozes pop sounds deserving of late summer sunshine, hopefully.

The XX

The fact that newcomers The XX are due to start a US tour on 22 September should be symbolic enough of their rise since releasing their first album in 2009. Before that though, be witness to a rich mix of sounds likened to early Cure sprinkled with modern pop. Seeing this will be something to brag about in a year's time.

One to miss

Tinie Tempah

There's no doubting he's everywhere this summer. Fresh from V Festival, the English rapper has drawn a vast fanbase. Only problem being that this fanbase tends to be screaming teenage girls of today's trend, armed with mobile downloads played like a sick cuckcoo clock. Oh, and maybe one of my Mancunian mates who's far too old.

Playing a rare UK festival date

Rolf Harris

Was there really an alternative? The musical asthmatic and cardboard masseuse commanded one of the biggest crowds at Glasonbury 2009. Ok, so it's only a year ago but with his indelible songs and light-hearted stage presence, this is sure to be an invigorating sing along.

Inside Tip

DJ Yoda

What is Bestival missing so far? A DJ who drops The Muppets theme tune into a set, that's what. The Brit DJ is now a bit of a phenomenon, a musical chef if you will. Think Heston Blumenthal on the decks with a blender, George Formby, Jurassic 5 and some fetching tupperware.

Be at Bestival if you like...

A handpicked line-up by Robd Bank that features high rollers and the unknown. Eclecticism. Surprises. Fancy dress.

Avoid if you hate...

Travelling by ferry. Eccentricity. Fancy dress.

Festival tactics

Get up at the crack of dawn, or, even better, travel the night before if you can stay somewhere as the car parks open at 9am on Thursday 9 September. Book your ferry as soon as possible and plan your timings.

Fashionista or folky?

With the line-up handpicked by one man, you are somewhat devoid of any pigeon holing since the trend isn't really yours to follow. There's a lot of fancy dress and the theme this year is 'Fantasy'. So, if anything, you're a bit of a pawn and you best just get on with it!

Alcohol of choice

With so many musical genres on display, you should mix and match (N.B. I am not encouraging, nor will I be held responsible). The official website states each person can bring a 'reasonable amount' but goes no further in their description. Also worth noting that you can only consume personal alcohol supplies in the campsite. Licensed bars are on offer in the arenas and we can recommend the Bollywood Bar cocktails

Take your mum score – 7/10

With all the fancy dress, range of music, beautiful setting and The Pamper Lounge – a decadent spa – mother will surely feel like she's had an experience.
