Jersey Live Music Festival 2010
– 4-5 September
What is it?
Far from a local event for local people, Jersey Music Live is more
an international affair. Well, American Darwin Deez is playing twice. This Channel Island two-dayer draws a lot from the indie
army with Biffy Clyro, The View, We Have Band and more propping up the
good ship Groove Armada and self-inflating lifetime
achievement raft Paul Weller. It all takes place at Royal Jersey Showground with four stages
(a fifth if you’ve been bumped up to hospitality) of entertainment and the usual bars and eateries as well.
Three to see
Groove Armada
Big dance act,
famed most for chart anthems like ‘Superstylin’’, out to prove they’ve still got it.
Chase
& Status
The hottest drum n bass act on the planet continue their ascent towards greatness with a mixture
of heavy basslines, monstrous drums and a touch of dubstep.
Jaguar
Skills
Blink and it’s gone-style mixing from anonymous DJ who is guaranteed to kick start any party.

Can I still get tickets?
Weekend tickets are £84
and £54 for a single day, kids aged 12 and under can get the same passes for £10
for both days or £5 for either day. Hospitality passes are also available.

Bingley Music Live 2010 – 3-5 September
What is it?
You
don’t get bargains like this in the Woolies 50p basket. Back for a fourth outing, Bingley Music Live is possibly the
steal of the festival season with three days of sterling live music for just £30. Tucked neatly into
a natural amphitheatre, the festival is a little no frills in terms of alternative entertainment, but it packs a punch music-wise.
A selection of food outlets and watering holes will keep punters refreshed too.
Three to see
PiL
After cashing in on a Sex Pistols comeback, singer John Lydon has wheeled out his post punks Public Image Ltd to grab a
few more bucks Crystal Maze-style. This will be the only UK festival stop for the group, so catch them before Lydon starts
shift butter again.
Gaggle
This 20-piece all-female
choir may seem like a little bit of a novelty, but as with all gimicks, you only have to see them once. Remember you liked
Goldie Lookin Chain once…
Craig
Charles Fantasy Funk Band
We’ve had supergroups before – Them Crooked Vultures, Audioslave etc
– but this funk collective strung together by Red Dwarf muso Craig Charles takes the biscuit and slap basses it into
a million little pieces.

In what is one of the festival bargains
of the year, Bingley Music Live tickets are a poultry £30 for the weekend or £20
a day.

Moseley Folk Festival 2010 – 3-5 September
What is it?
Returning to
Moseley Park in Birmingham (hence the name), this three-day day folk festival (hence the name) marries the best of yesteryear
and the emerging stars of the scene. If the two stages aren’t enough to keep you entertained, the workshops, pub sessions
(don’t think Bravo’s Booze Britain here) and family-friendly treats will.
Three to see
Beth Jeans Houghton
Not just moving away the traditional
folk template, but tearing it up and shoving it into Joni Mitchell’s mouth, Beth Jean Houghton can be haunting, graceful
and damn right kooky in one track.
The Low Anthem
Some music simply snakes around you and reduces you down to tears with its elegance. The Low Anthem’s ‘Charles
Darwin’ does this with goose-pimpling ease, just don’t let your mates know down the pub know, alright geeze?
Johnny Flynn
A stalwart of modern folk,
Flynn laid down the model for the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons and Noah And The Whale, but there is a reason
why he’s still the daddy.

Off The Tracks 2010 – 3-5 September
What is it?
Off The Tracks
have proved to the world, for nearly a quarter of a century, that small is not only beautiful but it can be a barrel loads
of fun as well. And there are 45 barrels-full of fun to be had this time around as organisers froth towards what must be the
CAMRA festival of the year, if there is such a thing. Two stages of music, bits to do for the kids and money raised for charity,
it’s a shame Donington is famed for Monsters Of Rock and Download instead of Off The Tracks.
Three
to see
Kissmet
A constant crowd-pleaser, Kissmet don’t only join the dots between bhangra,
reggae and funk, they scribble over the lines and fill it all in as well.
Misty in Roots
Brilliant British roots reggae band, whose popularity was sadly overshadowed by
cheesy contemporaries Aswad.
New Groove Formation
With more brass than the Salvation Army, New Groove Formation are an oomph of energy mixing funk, ska and reggae.
Can I still get tickets?
Yes, but be quick as the spring leg of the event sold out. They are £60
for adults over the weekend and £30 for children. All passes include camping.
