Over the fence: other festivals to check out this week
Bearded Theory and ATP Festival Weekend Two (Pavement)

Alex Fahey - 07 May 2010
Bearded Theory 2010 – 14-16
May
What is it?
Three days of music, comedy and family entertainment amongst the
greenery of Derbyshire. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere, cheap ale and plenty of facial topiary as the festival looks set
to build on the success of the last two years - there is even the chance to be part of a world record attempt, yes it is beard
related.
Three to see:
Pama
International – Dub and ska from a collective of past masters including The Specials’, Lynval Golding,
Ranking Roger’s Fuzz Townshend and Easy All Stars’ Marcos Ferrari.
New Model Army – Demonstrating that post-punk had more longevity than its punk forefathers
with Justin Sullivan and Co. still touring after 26 years and 11 albums, keep your ears pricked for the seminal, ‘Smalltown
England’.
Tragic Roundabout – Banjos,
accordions and lashings of tongue-in-cheek psychedelic-folk; the perfect festival act.
Can I still get
tickets?
If you’re quick and with a bit of wizardry you may just bag one of the remaining 200 hundred
tickets at £65 for the weekend.

ATP Festival Weekend Two (Pavement) 2010 – 14-16 May
What is it?
The second instalment of the All Tomorrow’s Parties, this weekend it’s
the turn of nineties US indie idols Pavement to curate the event. Live in comparative luxury at Camber Sand’s Butlins
whilst indulging in the indie styling of The Raincoats and Calexico interceded with trips to the holiday camp’s swimming
pool and arcade machines. It’s like stepping into Stephen Malkus’ mind.
Three to see:
Wooden Shjips – Not only have Pavement deemed the Velvet
Underground inspired gloom rock of Wooden Shjips good enough for the ATP line-up, they’ve also been supporting Stephen Malkmus and Co.
on their come back tour. That’s some endorsement.
Avi Buffalo – Naming your band after yourself
must be the ultimate act of narcissism just ask Jon Bon Jovi. Naming the band and the debut album after you is just plain
arrogant but luckily Avi Buffalo’s wistful, indie-pop is receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike.
The Fall – Such is the rotating door policy of The Fall line-up they may have shed another member before
you’ve finished this sentence. One thing is certain though, the grumpy, Manchunian Mark E Smith, will be there along
with a brand new album and expansive back catalogue.
Can I still get tickets?
Perhaps aided
by the recent Pavement re-union or maybe by the recession forced popularity in ‘staycations’ but we’re afraid
that Camber Sands and festivals tickets have sold-out for this weekend.
