Scroobius Pip - Beach Break Live review

'He goes down a storm'

"I'm not a student, I'm not going to down it!" Clearly Scroobius Pip is not one to succumb to peer pressure, or one to not savour a bottle of red.

Treating Beach Break to a selection from his rockier 'Distraction Pieces' album, he goes down a storm, with his familiar scattergun witticisms working well against an abrasive background.

Even when he brings it down a notch for the more reflective 'Broken Promise', pondering "is a lie still a lie if you meant it at the time?" the crowd are still with him, clapping along, before they get rowdy (a word Pip berates himself for using too much) for 'Astronaut' and a sinister 'The Struggle', which casts Johnny Depp as a serial killer.

The aftermath of thunderous closer 'Let Em Come' sees Pip sing along. Cheekily leaving the stage to get an encore, inevitably it's 'Earthquake' and inevitably, everyone goes ballistic. A few more killer songs are needed to move up the bill, but for now, it's job done.
