A handy guide from Strepsils: how to stay well at festivals
Plus the chance to win £250 worth of vouchers to spend on summer fun

Virtual Festivals - 20 June 2011
The latest research from Strepsils reports that 82% of people have claimed to have suffered from a sore throat over the
summer with 28% of people saying that they'd missed out because of one, so don’t let a sore throat make you miss out
on your party this year.
Leading independent GP Dr. Rob Hicks says:
"At festivals, partying and over-using the voice may weaken a person's immune system leaving them more susceptible to any
viral or bacterial infections they come into contact with. Also, any pollution exposure during a festival or prolonged periods
outside can irritate the throat."
The festival season contains many hazards, these handy hints
from Strepsils, the throat experts, should make sure you’re able to stay ‘on song’ with your favourite headliners:
Avoid irritants!
Avoid irritants that can cause reddening and swelling. Think cigarette smoke,
pollution and shouting.
Nose how to breathe!
Breathe in through your nose. Your nose is
an excellent filter of bacteria and other harmful irritants and helps warm the air too.
Spray when you’ve
got the space!
Avoid using deodorants in a closed space if you find they irritate the throat – that includes
tents!
Keep your throat moist!
Swallow regularly. Our saliva naturally helps cleanse the
throat.
Use medication if needed!
If necessary take a medicated lozenge for effective relief
from a pesky sore throat.
Your throat isn’t the only thing that needs looking after at the festival. These
tips should help keep you in ship shape and dancing all day long:
Eat something healthy!
While
it's much easier to eat healthily at festivals these days, it's most likely not going to be your priority. How about taking
some cereal bars with you for a quick and easy bit of nutrition, before you eat your body weight in noodles? Vital vitamins
found in fruit and vegetables will also help support your immune system.
Stay hydrated!
Drinking
plenty of water will help you keep your voice and it'll also keep you hydrated. Things are bound to get sweaty; the more liquids
you get onboard, the easier you’ll find it staying in the game once you're drinking something a little stronger! But
please remember to drink sensibly!
Wear sunscreen!
Even if you’re at Bestival, no-one
wants to look like a lobster after too much sun - even if that's the fancy dress theme. There are less painful and healthier
ways to get the look, so make sure you slap the suncream on!
Be prepared for all weather!
While
you're being optimistic with the suncream, be realistic and bring wellies or walking boots with you. If things start to get
muddy, your Converse are unlikely to be much help, and the "two pairs of socks and lots of plastic bags" alternative might
mean you get trenchfoot. If it’s muddy at Glastonbury, rolling about in it is probably not a great idea either. If the
weather is great – fingers crossed - hayfever is also a common hazard at festivals. Sufferers beware!
And
finally…
Finally, don't buy a jester hat - those things are flammable for a reason.
Hopefully
some of these ideas will help you avoid picking up anything nasty during your festival weekend.
