The symphonic tones of "Ecstacy of Gold" ring out under another majestic Donington sunset and the crowd reach fever pitch when Lars Ulrich sprints out and dives behind his drum kit like a kid at Christmas, as the band plough into Creeping Death. The next two hours deliver Metallica at their indestructable best. Celebrating the 20th birthday of their legendary Master of Puppets album, we get a performance of the record in its entirety plus a smattering of live favourites including Sad But True, One, Seek and Destroy and, of course, Enter Sandman. It feels liks a triumphant homecoming. It has to be one of their best shows ever and 77,000 fans are left in awe.
Munky, Fieldy and Dave Silveria from Korn stride out to the front of the stage and announce: "We've had some issues, but we're going to play on with some friends of ours". The crowd roars approvingly. Korn & Friends perform the following set-list. It's emotional and spectacular. A pure Download moment.
It's On (with Jesse Hasek from 10 Years)
Falling Away (with M Shadow from Avenged Sevenfold)
Somebody (with Dez Fafara from Devildriver)
Coming Undone (with Dez Fafara from 'Devildriver')
A.D.I.D.A.S. (with Benji Webbe from Skindred)
Clown (with Corey Taylor from Stone Sour)
Freak (with Corey Taylor from Stone Sour)
Blind (with Matt Healy from Trivium)
It is confirmed that Korn frontman Jonathan Davies is ill in a London hospital, and will not be able to perform today. The show will go on without him, however, with some 'Very Special Guests' rolling up for some Korn Karaoke. "It's Metallica in 2004 all over again!", enthuse and groan different people, apart from Metallica who just smirk (in our heads).
Full time - England:1 Paraguay: 0. Back to the rock.
Just three minutes into the England vs Paraguay World Cup match, Beckham produces a superb inswinging set-piece from out on the left hand side which finds its way into the back of the net via Paraguay defender Carlos Guerra. All almighty roar of joy erupts across all corners of Donington.
En-ger-land. Everyone's getting very very excited as the match draws closer. The big outdoor cinema screen is broadcasting the pre-match commentary.
Sniffed out some backstage rumours. Apparently Kid Rock is confirmed to join Guns N' Roses tomorrow night. In other GNR-related news, I hear we may also be joined today by my old mucker Duff McCagan. He has been joining Alice in Chains at some of their US dates and they're on the main stage here today.
Four tour busses arrive backstage carrying Korn, suggesting that at least two of them must be good enough friends still to travel together! Metallica only have three busses, but generate more excitement as those big white crates emblazoned with their logo are rolled out.
Down to the main stage to see who the secret band are, listed teasingly on the line-up as ???? Turns out it's supergroup DOWN - featuring Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), Rex Brown (Pantera), Jimmy Bower (Crowbar) and the legendary Phil Anselmo (Pantera). The charges are set and the match lit... it's half an hour of pure dynamite.
Emerge from tent into another glorious day - still no clouds to be seen. Footballs are flying through the air all over the place - from the campsites to the main arena.
