The Crescent, backstage @ V2002

20 August 2002

We caught up with young Liverpool hopefulls 'The Crescent', over saussage and chips in the backstage canteen, at V2002. Bassist Sean Longworth happily chatted about his newfound rock n' roll lifestyle, and the Swedish kind of groupies!

VF: What were you expecting of V?

Sean: I dunno 'cos this is our first festival so it's all just a bit of a learning process. I had tonsillitis the last few days and Karl's just come down with it, so everybody's been a little bit sick but it's been good. We sounded good on stage, anyway.

And the new album….?

It comes out in Japan before it comes out in England! But it's a great album, very melodic.

What have you got that's different from any of the other 5000 Liverpool bands doing the rounds at the mpoment?

We've got a hobbit that plays guitar.

Yeah. No. I dunno what makes us different but we are different. All the bands are different in their own little way. You pick up a bit from the past, a bit from the future and a bit of yourself all in one. So it's just different people's interpretations of what they do and this is ours.

Very good answer. Who else on the V bill interests you?

We're gonna go and see The Coral 'cos we've never seen them before even though they're from Liverpool. Also, Primal Scream….and the Sugababes 'cos they're fit. Well, one of them's fit!

Talking of The Coral - How do you feel about all of the bands that seem to be emerging from Liverpool at the moment?

I think it's a good vibe in Liverpool at the minute. The more it carries on, the more it'll progress into something a bit more special. 'Cos when we first started it was us, The Coral and Tramp Attack. Tramp Attack have gone now but there's other bands like The Bandits who've joined us. It's good, man. It needs a bit of a vibe going to save music at the minute.

You toured with The Bluetones, who are also at V. What was that like?

Strange. It was weird. We were playing in places that no-one ever plays. Have you ever been to Whitehaven? (VF shakes their collective head) Exactly. I hadn't. There's four boats and a sheep. But, it's good to play anywhere, really. Even if it's three people. It's all experience. We're supporting the Toploader, next. (VF shakes their collective head, again, The Crescent laugh collectively). It's just one of them things.

We'll just steal their crowd.

Do you think that there will be a difference between the Stafford and Chelmsford leg of V?

The further south you go, there's a different kind of people. In London, there's a band playing every night of the week so they don't appreciate wanting, or waiting to see anybody. So that's the difference. Where we come from, you have to wait for a band every three months but down there they play one every fuckin' week. It's not their fault, they're just fuckin' spoilt.

When are you touring?

We're touring from September 2nd to the 12th for the next single 'Spinning Wheels' then we're doing a tour in October with the album and then….we'll be touring with the mighty Toploader!

Any other festivals planned?

No. I might have a festival in my back garden when I get home.

Have you ever been to a festival as a punter?

No. I'm not into it - waking up with a headshock and all that - know worra mean? But this one's sound. This one's good. You hear stories off other people about what other ones are like. You go and watch a band, come back and someone's shit in your tent. I couldn't deal with that.

Is the success you've had so far living up to what you imagined?

It's good. You get paid for doing nothing, you get loads of free stuff and you get to party all of the time. And in Liverpool we do like the rock 'n roll lifestyle. As you can tell 'cos Karl's dead somewhere.

How long have you guys been going for?

Too fuckin' long. As this line-up - about two and a half years. Me, John and Karl have been in 'The Crescent' for about five years. But most of that time we've just been messing 'round. We only got serious about two years ago.

Did you always know you'd end up playing a festival?

I always thought we'd get signed but we never had a plan. When we play, people come over and ask how to get signed. But I don't know. Fuckin' hell. Someone just asked us one day and we said yes. We never sent one demo off at all. Anywhere.

Have you found anything disappointing about gigs or festivals?

A lack of naked, Swedish blondes. The female kind.

No groupie attention, then?

We get enough groupie attention but they're not dead good-looking. Well, I do but the rest of the band don't. Do you know worra mean?
