Who and why at Reading/Leeds

24 August 2005

Dust off your hoody, buff up your hipflask and go and order your Joe Bananas tent, because the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals are back to raise hell this weekend.

Please click on a photo to enlarge it...

Historically, the UK’s biggest, best and most popular rock festival, 2005 sees the Carling Weekend reclaim its position atop the mighty throne of M.E.T.A.L. Drainpipe wearing, toss-off, eyeliner-ridden indie is also catered for (hello Babyshambles fans) but anyone not there for Queens Of The (will they actually make it?) Stoneage and M.A.I.D.E.N will be ritually, hung, drawn and burned.

As usual, the line-up is pretty supreme. An inclusive mix of proper metal (Maiden, Manson, Bad Religion), proper rock (QOTSA, Foos, Incubus), proper indie (Kasabian, Bloc Party, Pixies), proper dance (Lemon Jelly, Mylo, Four Tet) and proper shit (Dogs, The Others and Raveonettes).

So who you should you see, where, and why?

Who: Arctic Monkeys
When: Carling Stage. Reading - Sat, Leeds - Sun
What: Recently signed to Franz’ record label, Domino, three guesses as to what they sound like.
Why: It’s already written in stone that they’ll be bigger than god this time next year, so go early, get pictures on your phone. Be happy.

Who: Iron Maiden
When: Main Stage. Reading - Sun. Leeds - Fri
What: MAIDEN!
Why: The first four albums by Maiden will be played. Bruce Dickinson

Who: The Killers
When: Main Stage. Reading - Sat. Leeds - Sun
What: Coldplay for cool people
Why: Because your parents will probably be watching them too.

Who: Incubus
When: Main Stage. Reading - Sun. Leeds - Fri
What: West Coast spunk funk old-skool nu-metal gone soft. Secretly, we all love it.
Why: Because Brandon will take his top off.

Who: Maximo Park
When: NME/Radio 1 Stage. Reading - Sun. Leeds - Fri
What: Unless you went to V, you won’t have seen any of Franz at a UK festival. Maximo Park are a Franz cover band.
Why: Because it’s guaranteed to make money. Special points for capturing the moment when they put on their stage suits!

Who: Elbow
When: Main Stage. Reading - Fri. Leeds - Sat
What: Fine, Northern miserabelia of the very highest order.
Why: Probably the best band at the whole festival.

Who: The Cooper Temple Clause
When: NME Radio 1/Stage. Reading - Fri. Leeds - Sat
What: The band of our generation, innit. Hair, synths, guitars and flaming guerrillas.
Why: You won’t be able to avoid them.

Who: Four Tet
When: Dance Stage. Reading - Sun. Leeds - Fri
What: Trippy, Mr Whippy beats and luxurious laptop electronica
Why: Because you can’t dance to rock music.

Who: Editors
When: NME/Radio 1 Stage. Reading - Sat. Leeds - Sun
What: Joy Division, but not dead, honey.
Why: They’re the UK’s best new band, dontchaknow. And they have songs.

Who: The Tears
When: NME/Radio 1. Reading - Sat. Leeds - Sun
What: New Suede, old Bernard.
Why: To laugh at Brett’s lyrics (“We are the lovers/We’re different colours”) and to marvel at Lord Bernard Butler and his guitar virtuosity.

And what other than the bands? Why not put your own musical skills to the test in the Nokia Raw Zone. For more information click here now.
