It says a lot about Solange‘s character that she chooses not to add her immediately recognisable surname to her stage title. If the line-up had “Solange Knowles” down for this late afternoon performance at the Park, then you’d expect the field to be much more filled out. Or we may even have been watching this at the Pyramid stage. As it is, Solange has chosen to defiantly carve out her own career path, rather than live in the shadow of Beyonce, her older sister.
This independence has arguably given Solange the freedom to craft her own unique sound (a delicious mix of deep soul and sublime, contagious pop that would have made an 80s’ Madonna weep), and to collaborate with some interesting, independent artists, such as Brooklyn’s Dirty Projectors, whose track ‘Younger‘ Solange includes in this evening’s set.
It’s a dedicated, loving crowd that greets Solange when she takes the stage at the Park for this early evening slot. Every song in this rapturous set is devoured with delight, providing several of those special “Glastonbury moments”. At one point nearly every single person on the Park’s natural amphitheatre of a hill is moving forward and backwards in unison to the infectious beat, creating their own unifying dance rhythm that clearly moves Solange.
“Glastonbury!” Solange coos in response. “I couldn’t have dreamt this up when I was a little girl that I’d be playing here. And with you making your own special dance move as well!“
She finishes with the incredible ‘Losing You‘ but not before stopping the intro a few beats in and warning the crowd to “lose your camera phones and lose your fucking minds!“. The Park crowd happily oblige, and the field turns into one gyrating, grinding, smooching mass. Next stop: Pyramid Stage.
